Towards recovery of 10 Critically Endangered plants
Project overview
Effective conservation of threatened species often requires more than solely protecting populations within well-managed protected areas. Their long-term conservation can require supplementary forms of management, typically through the development of species recovery programmes that incorporate both on-site and off-site actions.
This project aims to enhance the overall conservation of 10 Australian Critically endangered species in Western Australia and Tasmania, through off-site and on-site activities that contribute towards recovery and restoration of these species in the future.
Funding for this project was generously provided by the Millenium Seed Bank at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
Project Aims
- Pre collection field surveys to ensure that the plants can be found, and the likely timing of seed set.
- Secure seed from species not currently in Australian Seed Banks, and to improve diversity and quantity of exisiting collections.
- Develop germination protocols to determine the optimum conditions for germination and contribute towards a practical guide for restoration/conservation practitioners.
- Propagate plants for Seed Production Areas and Translocations.
