New Project: Myrtle Mayday

We’re excited to launch the Myrtle Mayday Project, a new national conservation initiative to help protect Australia’s threatened Myrtaceae species from the devastating impacts of Myrtle Rust. This fungal disease has already affected hundreds of native species, putting many at risk of extinction.

Led by the Australian Seed Bank Partnership, this project will focus on collecting, testing, and banking seeds and other germplasm from 31 nationally listed species across Queensland, Western Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales. By securing these species in conservation seed banks, we’re ensuring they have a future, even if wild populations decline further.

This important work is made possible through the support of the Australian Government’s Saving Native Species Program, which is funding projects to improve outcomes for priority plants under the Threatened Species Action Plan 2022–2032.

Stay tuned for project updates as we work with our partners to safeguard Australia’s unique flora.
